Have you noticed how quickly software stopped asking permission? A few years ago, an onchain transfer still felt like something a person sat down and approved. Now the conversation has shifted. Autonomous programs can place trades, move collateral, settle invoices, and rebalance a book while the operator is asleep. That is exciting. It is also the part most capacity models still treat as a footnote. I keep coming back to a simple question: what happens to Layer 1 block space when the users never clock out?

Why Infinite Block Space Was Always A Soft Assumption

For a long stretch, many of us behaved as if chain capacity were practically unlimited. Fees spiked now and then. A mint day got ugly. A popular launch jammed a mempool. Then things cooled, and the industry went back to talking about user experience as if congestion were a seasonal flu. In my experience, that calm is what lets people ignore design choices that only matter under load.

The new wrinkle is not another wave of human retail. It is AI agents that can act on instructions, talk to software, and finish tasks with almost no babysitting. Apply that to finance and you do not just add more wallets. You add machines that can fire the same action again and again, across time zones, without lunch breaks or compliance meetings that last until Friday afternoon.

A senior voice from the Avalanche treasury side put it bluntly at a New York gathering this month. If agent activity only reaches the lower end of current market guesses, a lot of that work still lands on a blockchain. And once it does, the old line that block space is infinite starts to look sloppy. I tend to agree. Not because every forecast will hit. Because even a modest hit changes the texture of demand.

As long as AI agent activities reach the lower end of market expectations, relevant activities will occur on the blockchain. There is not enough block space, and block space is no longer infinite.

He did not hand over a neat transaction count or a date when the ceiling cracks. Fair enough. Predictions that arrive with a fake decimal usually age poorly. The claim is narrower and, frankly, more useful. Sustained agent use in markets would create recurring demand, not a weekend experiment that dies after the demo video.

Agents Do Not Trade Like People

People batch decisions. We wait for a price alert. We second-guess a ticket. We miss a window because a meeting ran long. Agents do not share those frictions. Give them a mandate and they can keep poking the same rails: swap, post margin, roll a position, pay a vendor, prove a document was not tampered with. Each poke is a transaction. Each transaction wants inclusion.

That is why the squeeze story is not “more users.” It is higher duty cycle. A thousand humans might generate a burst at the open. A few hundred well-funded agents can generate a drumbeat that never quite stops. Perhaps the most interesting aspect is how ordinary that drumbeat can look. No fireworks. Just constant small claims on the same scarce resource.

When Capacity Gets Tight, L1 Differences Stop Being Trivia

While blocks feel cheap, users treat Avalanche, Solana, and Ethereum as interchangeable brands with different logos. Speed is “fine.” Fees are “whatever.” Finality is a word for conference slides. I’ve found that people only study plumbing after they get wet.

Under heavier demand, the small stuff becomes the whole conversation. How fast does a trade become final? What does a fee spike do to an agent that must act every few seconds? Can a firm spin up an environment that matches its compliance posture instead of sharing a crowded public lane with meme traffic? Those questions sound academic until an automated book starts missing fills because the chain is busy with someone else’s experiment.

Theoretically, there are many subtle differences between these L1s. Users can overlook many of them while capacity remains readily available. Under heavier demand, these differences will become important.

Avalanche’s pitch in that setting is familiar if you have watched the network for a while. Separate Layer 1 environments. Room to tune privacy and security for a business case rather than forcing every workflow onto one global hallway. Whether you love that architecture or not, it is the sort of design that only gets a serious hearing when shared block space starts to feel contested.

Privacy is the piece I would not shrug off. Institutions can live with public settlement for some products. They still flinch at dumping raw files, client lists, or internal documents onto a chain that anyone can scrape. A model that proves a record was not altered without publishing the record itself is the grown-up version of “put it onchain.”

Real Deployments, Not Just Summit Talk

Talk is cheap. Shipments are less so. Mid-September brought a concrete example in the Gulf. Avalanche was chosen as the base layer for a digital vault tied to a national identity platform that already reaches more than twelve million people and thousands of public and private services. The point of the vault is verification, not gossip. Cryptographic records show a document has not been changed. The personal contents stay off the public ledger.

That split matters. You get auditability without turning a passport scan into street theater. Local implementation sits with a regional partner. Network tooling and support sit with the core Avalanche team. A government regulator still owns the service. It is messy in the way real infrastructure is messy. It is also the opposite of a weekend hackathon.

Asia is moving on a parallel track. A large Korean securities house finished a tokenized securities platform built to run on Avalanche ahead of a regulated security-token market expected to open in February 2027. Issuance and distribution are the unglamorous verbs here. If that framework lands on schedule, brokers will have a legal path to represent qualifying paper on a chain instead of a shared drive and a courier.

Tokenized real-world assets have already left the lab. Distributed value on Avalanche recently printed around $2.1 billion after a sharp thirty-day jump. A production book north of $11 billion in assets was placed on the network with oracle infrastructure in the middle. A well-known Treasury product on the same rails had already crossed the $900 million mark. Other large asset managers have used the chain or flagged plans. You can argue about the quality of every line item. You cannot argue that this is still just test transfers between friends.

Markets That Never Sleep On Weekdays

The other half of the warning is almost old-fashioned. Traditional markets are inching toward continuous weekday trading. The forecast on the table is blunt: by mid-2027, major venues could run twenty-four hours a day, five days a week. That is not crypto maximalism. That is exchange operators admitting the globe does not pause because New York went to dinner.

Existing pipes were not built for that. Clearing, collateral, and risk engines still assume a close, a batch, a weekend to catch up. Stretch the session and those assumptions snap. New infrastructure has to be stood up. The argument, which I think is directionally right even if the calendar slips, is that the replacement stack gets built on a blockchain rather than a prettier version of yesterday’s mainframe.

New infrastructure must be created, and it would not be built using the old model but rather built on the blockchain.

Now layer agents on top of a 24/5 tape. The market is open in Tokyo while London is stretching and New York is still dark. Models keep scoring. Collateral keeps moving. An automated desk does not care that your operations team wanted a quiet night. Settlement that only works during banker hours becomes a bottleneck with a polite name.

A Listed Vehicle, A Crowded Narrative

There is a corporate subplot that makes the speech less abstract. Avalanche Treasury Company began trading on Nasdaq in June under the AVAT ticker after a SPAC combination valued near $675 million. At debut it held roughly 15 million AVAX, about 3.5 percent of circulating supply at the time. The first session was ugly. The stock opened near $2.99, closed around $1.85, and saw a few hundred thousand shares change hands. Market value sat near $486 million after that drop.

The stated idea is not a passive pile of tokens. Capital is supposed to work across the ecosystem. Fine. The balance sheet still breathes with AVAX. Anyone who pretends otherwise is selling a story. The board and advisory circle includes well-known builders from Avalanche and lending markets. Backers span a familiar list of crypto funds and trading firms. Before this role, the CEO spent nearly fourteen years at a major market-making shop with a digital-asset brief. That background shows. The comments mix trading-hour realism with chain-capacity anxiety.

Should you treat the listing as a clean proxy for the network? I would not. It is exposure with corporate wrapper, governance, and equity volatility on top of token volatility. Useful for some U.S. accounts that cannot or will not hold the asset directly. Incomplete as a map of actual block demand.

What “Not Enough Block Space” Actually Means

People hear the phrase and picture a hard halt. Chains rarely die that way. They get expensive, slow, and politically loud. Priority fees climb. Agents bid against agents. Humans get priced out of simple transfers. Builders argue about whether to raise limits, split load, or shove activity onto a side environment. That fight is the squeeze.

There is a second meaning that is easier to miss. Block space is not only bytes. It is the right to change shared state in a window the rest of the world will accept. Agents that settle value need that right to be predictable. A chain that is “fast on average” but chaotic at the 99th percentile is a poor home for a machine that must act every minute.

  2. Ask who gets crowded out when fees jump.
  3. Separate public gossip traffic from regulated workflows where you can.
  4. Design agent mandates with fee and finality limits, not only price targets.
  5. Assume 24/5 markets before your ops manual does.

That list is boring on purpose. Capacity problems are rarely solved by a slogan. They are solved by people who get tired of missing SLAs.

The Quiet Risk: Homogeneous Agent Behavior

Here is the part that keeps me up a little. If many agents train on similar data and chase similar edges, they will lunge at the same blocks. Human crowds already do this. Machines just do it faster and with less shame. A crowded trade on a crowded chain is how you get both a market event and a throughput event in the same hour.

I do not think that requires a sci-fi swarm. It only requires a handful of popular frameworks, a few shared oracles, and a habit of copying the last strategy that printed. Diversity of models is a capacity tool as much as it is an alpha tool. Nobody markets it that way. They should.

Stablecoin payment flows already hint at the pattern. One widely used dollar token has been reported as the rail for the vast majority of a new machine-to-machine payment standard. Concentration is efficient until it is not. The same lesson applies to which L1 those agents pick when they need finality in a hurry.

Avalanche, Solana, Ethereum: Different Stress Tests

Ethereum still wins on gravity. Liquidity, tooling, and the habit of “default here” are real advantages. They also attract the noisiest traffic. When agents arrive, they will not all be polite. Some will be spam with a business plan.

Solana wins arguments about raw speed until the moment it does not. High throughput is a gift for agent loops. The question is always the same: how does the experience feel when everyone else discovers the gift at once?

Avalanche tries to duck the single-hallway problem by letting organizations run tailored environments. That can look like extra complexity when the chain is quiet. It can look like sanity when a bank does not want its settlement lane sitting next to a speculative mint. I am not here to crown a winner. I am here to say the beauty contest ends when queues form.

What Builders And Treasurers Should Do Before The Crowd

If you ship agent software, budget for ugly days. Hard-code maximum fees. Define what “give up and wait” means. Log every onchain attempt as if a regulator will read it, because someday one might. If you run a treasury, stop treating chain choice as a branding exercise. Map which actions are bursty and which are constant. Constant wins the capacity war.

If you allocate to tokens or to listed wrappers, separate the narrative from the meter. A story about AI can lift a ticker. It does not fill a block. Watch actual settlement, actual vault writes, actual issuance. Those are the breadcrumbs that tell you whether the squeeze is a speech or a schedule.

And if you still think block space is a free good, try a thought experiment. Give ten agents a mandate to reprice collateral every minute across three venues for a year. Do the multiplication. Then remember that your experiment is someone else’s production system.


A Less Romantic Ending

I like agents. I like markets that stay open when the sun is up somewhere. I like the idea that a document can be proven without being published. None of that erases physics. Shared ledgers have a width. Software that never sleeps will find that width faster than conference panels will admit.

The useful stance is not panic and it is not smugness. Watch the lower-end forecasts, not the moon ones. Watch whether 24/5 trading actually arrives or merely gets promised again. Watch whether privacy-preserving verification becomes normal for public services. Watch whether tokenized securities in Korea stay a platform slide or become a daily workflow. Those are the tells.

Block space was never infinite. We just enjoyed a stretch where it felt that way. Agents and longer market hours are how that stretch ends. Not with a bang, maybe. With a fee ticker that stops looking optional, and a sudden interest in why one Layer 1 is not quite like the next.
