The 2026 season follows the country’s extraordinary 2023 experience, when roughly 15 million hectares burned—about seven times the long-term national average. That earlier record still shapes how many observers interpret the current year. Even a “quieter” season by recent standards remains historically elevated.

In the United States the total stands at approximately 2.4 million hectares. Oregon and Washington have seen some of the most severe ongoing activity. More than one hundred large wildfires were actively burning in early August. Drought conditions covering more than a quarter of the country’s land area continue to provide the underlying fuel. Long-term data show an interesting shift: the number of individual fires has declined over recent decades while the total area burned has risen. South America contributes about 7 percent of the global total. Venezuela leads with nearly 3 million hectares, followed by Brazil at just over 2 million. Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile all register meaningful areas as well. Europe’s share sits at roughly 3.6 percent. Russia accounts for the large majority of that regional total with 3.3 million hectares. Spain, Ukraine, France, and Italy appear lower on the absolute ranking yet have faced disproportionate impacts relative to their size and population density. The European numbers remain smaller than those of the tropical continents, but the human and economic costs often run higher per hectare burned.

It reflects persistent patterns of vegetation type, climate seasonality, and human land-use practices. Oceania’s 11 percent is driven almost entirely by Australia. Asia’s 18 percent spreads across a wider set of countries but still concentrates in a handful of high-activity nations. South America, North America, and Europe together make up less than 17 percent of the global total, yet they generate the majority of international media attention.

That imbalance in coverage is understandable. Fires near major cities, tourist destinations, or high-value timber resources attract cameras and political attention. Fires in remote savannas or sparsely populated tropical forests often do not. The data, however, remain indifferent to camera crews. They simply count the hectares.

Perhaps the most useful way to approach the 2026 figures is to treat them as a mid-year progress report rather than a final score. The Northern Hemisphere fire season still has months to run. Additional large events in Canada, the United States, Russia, or southern Europe could still shift the national rankings.
